What is Diabetes Mellitus?

Diabetes Mellitus is a group of metabolic diseases -- disorder of glucose (sugar) metabolism -- in which a person has high sugar in blood either because:
  • the body does not produce enough insulin, or
  • cells do not respond to the insulin that is produced

There are three main types of Diabetes Mellitus, they are:
  • Type 1 Diabetes -- body's failure to produce insulin, also referred as insulin-dependant diabetes
  • Type 2 Diabetes -- results from insulin resistance, in which cells fail to use insulin properly in order to manage the sugar in blood.
  • Gestational Diabetes -- is when pregnant women, who have never had diabetes before, have a high blood glucose level during pregnancy. It may precede development of Type 2 DM

What is insulin, by the way?
